About the Institution

Kansas State University was founded in 1863 as a land-grant college under the Morrill Act. Today, K-State serves more than 23,000 students, plus 6,000 distance education students. K-State offers 200 undergraduate programs from five undergraduate colleges. This includes seven undergraduate degrees and twelve graduate degrees offered through distance education.

The 664-acre campus is located in Manhattan, Kansas, 125 miles west of Kansas City. Based on its academic programs, quality of students, student-faculty ratio, graduation rate, and other factors, K-State ranks in America’s top 40 public universities. K-State also ranks in the top one percent of all universities in the number of Rhodes Scholars chosen since 1974.

Animal Sciences and Industry

This program provides challenging courses to prepare for production, management, marketing, distribution, and sales applications in the food industry. It builds on a liberal arts foundation with a concentration in animal science, but also includes substantial coursework in agriculture, biological and physical sciences, mathematics, statistics, computer science, business, and economics. A minimum of 126 semester hours of credit is required for graduation. At least 30 semester hours must be taken with K-State, and 20 of the last 30 hours earned must be K-State hours. The minimum grade point average required for graduation is 2.0.

Early Childhood Education

Graduates work with children from birth to age five as teachers, administrators, and coordinators of parent education and volunteer programs in social service agencies; business or military-related child care centers; or franchised, school-based, private, and nonprofit child care programs. K-State offers 72 hours of general education and professional teacher education courses through distance education. Up to 62 credit hours of additional course work may be completed at the local community college level and transferred, as applicable, to meet K-State degree requirements.

Dietetics

The dietetics program at Kansas State University is recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduates. Top-ranked faculty prepare students for exciting careers in all facets of dietetics. The program is available to both in-state and out-of-state students. Supervised practical experience must be obtained by the student after graduation through a dietetics internship or approved pre-professional practice program. The program requires 125 credit hours. By utilizing multimedia delivery systems, K-State offers the professional courses of the dietetics degree program via distance education. The first two years of course work may be completed on the Manhattan campus, through distance education, or at a community college or other university. The last two years of the dietetics degree program may be completed through distance education.

Food Science and Industry

This undergraduate degree program deals with all aspects of the food industry–both theoretical and practical–from producing raw materials through processing and packaging, to marketing finished foods. The curriculum balances fundamental principles and practical applications of food science within a flexible program that permits students to tailor their education to personal career goals. Students choose between two options, science or business operations management, for their degrees. At least 30 semester hours must be taken with K-State, and 20 of the last 30 hours earned must be K-State hours. The minimum grade point average required for graduation is 2.0. The program is certified by the Institute of Food Technologists.

General Business

K-State offers a Bachelor of Science degree in General Business through distance education. This degree completion program is designed primarily for students who have completed the equivalent of the first two years of the business administration pre-professions (BAPP) program outlined by the College of Business Administration. The General Business degree provides a solid understanding of the fundamental areas in business: finance, accounting, management, and marketing. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the diverse environment of the business world. Applications for admission to this program are accepted through the Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in the Division of Continuing Education.

Interdisciplinary Social Science

This degree completion program is designed primarily for students who have completed the equivalent of the first two years of college. Social science is a branch of learning that examines society’s institutions—their structures, theoretical foundations, evaluation, and interrelationships—and how they affect and are affected by human behavior. The Interdisciplinary Social Science degree from K-State is a general social science degree. Students are required to take credits from a minimum of four social science disciplines. Social science disciplines include: anthropology, economics, geography, history, mass communications, political science, psychology, sociology, and women’s studies. A minimum of 124 semester hours of credit is required for graduation. At least 30 semester hours must be taken with K-State. At least 15 semester hours of upper-level social sciences must be taken. Twenty of the last 30 hours earned must be K-State hours. The minimum grade point average required for graduation is 2.0.

Technology Management

In today's high-tech and competitive business world, a K-State degree in technology management will give you the skills and experience to be successful. By combining a technical area of concentration with advanced business studies, you can be a professional who has the practical and leadership skills to move forward in business. Technology management students take courses in the diverse areas of management, accounting and marketing as well as other critical elements of business. The technical course work can be done in any number of other aviation or engineering technology programs. Technology management graduates are prepared for supervisory and management position in a variety of technical areas, ranging from aviation and manufacturing to sales and product development. Agribusiness

The Master’s in Agribusiness meets the educational needs of agribusiness professionals who wish to continue their careers while pursuing advanced degrees. The program focuses on mid-level agribusiness managers who need to make informed decisions based upon a thorough understanding of current issues facing agribusiness managers. Offered over a 2 1/2-year period, courses are paced to ensure an even course load with introductory courses followed by more advanced and applied work. On-campus courses are contained in two one-week short course sessions per year. The rest of the agribusiness course work is taken through K-State Internet courses.

Educational Leadership

With Emphasis in Educational Administration

The Department of Educational Leadership at Kansas State University offers course work leading to a master's degree and/or licensure for elementary and secondary educational leaders. A large portion of the coursework is enhanced by distance delivery systems.

The master's degree program is configured to meet individual professional goals. Programs are available that lead to district, building, and program-level licensure. District leadership is defined to mean central office roles. Building leadership leads to the principalship. Program leadership is aimed at all other educational leaders seeking advanced training in educational settings.

With Emphasis in Adult and Continuing Education

A portion of coursework is available by distance learning technologies (please note it is not possible to earn a complete master's degree in Adult and Continuing Education via distance).This program is geared toward working adults whose career is working with adults in educational and training situations. In addition to the coursework offered through distance education, K-State offers this Adult and Continuing Education Degree Program with on-site courses in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas City, and Wichita.

Engineering Degrees

The College of Engineering offers master’s degrees via distance education in:

There is no residency requirement or on-campus course attendance required for these degree programs. The master’s degrees in engineering would be of interest to professional engineers and computer scientists who already have bachelor’s degrees. The number of credit hours for each program varies between 30 to 36 credit hours. The courses are delivered using a variety of delivery methods including videotape, Web, or a combination of media.

Gerontology

Working together, the Great Plains-IDEA is developing an Internet-based gerontology curriculum. The inter-institutional M.S. program draws on the expertise of graduate faculty and graduate courses from seven universities. The program is taught entirely via the Internet and, upon completion of the curriculum, students receive a master’s degree. Students completing the program at Kansas State will earn an M.S. in Family Studies and Human Services with a Specialization in Gerontology.

Program content for this degree is based on core competencies identified by AGHE (Association for Gerontology in Higher Education). The program requires 36 credit hours, 24 of them in specific courses, and the remainder in elective courses. The 21-credit certificate program includes five specific courses and an additional 6 credits of electives.

Most courses will use Internet classrooms. Some have supplemental materials on videos or CDs and others may require phone conferencing. Interactivity between students and professors is through e-mail, phone conferencing, and the Internet classroom. Students should be able to complete the 36-credit-hour program in three years or less while employed full time.

The employment opportunities for gerontological specialists are growing as rapidly as the older population, and are as diverse. They will only grow in the future.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology

The Master’s in Industrial/Organizational Psychology degree offered by K-State through distance education provides working professionals with the skills and knowledge to excel in today’s rapidly changing and increasingly complex organizational environment. The 2 1/2-year curriculum emphasizes the application of concepts and behavioral science methodologies to problems facing the human resource professional. The Industrial/Organizational Psychology Master’s Degree program is designed for professionals in human resources, psychology, management, training and development, and/or people services. The program requires 38 credit hours for completion. It is offered on the Web using K-State Online. The program also requires a ten-day, on-campus summer session for years one and two.

Personal Financial Planning

The Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains-IDEA) is a consortium of Human Science Colleges at ten universities. The Great Plains-IDEA has developed an Internet-based personal financial planning curriculum that lets the student do course work at convenient times for them. The master’s degree program in personal financial planning draws on the expertise of graduate faculty and graduate courses from six universities. Upon completion of the curriculum, students are eligible to sit for the CFPTM Certification Examination. These courses in personal financial planning and counseling enable the students to enhance their personal financial knowledge, complete a master’s degree from any of the participating universities, and develop competencies that may lead to professional certification by the CFP Board. This program is for individuals wishing to further their financial planning skills and earn CFP certification. The program requires 42 credit hours for completion, and the program is taught via the Internet.

Merchandising

The Master's in Merchandising is designed to give industry professionals and others the opportunity to gain advanced merchandising knowledge in an interactive online setting. Students accepted into the program will complete 30 hours of coursework plus six credit hours of thesis or practicum experience. The K-State merchandising Master's degree is part of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance. The program is designed to be completed in a minimum of two years. Graduates of the program may work in areas such as product development, promotions, and retail management among other opportunities.

This program is a collaborative, multi-institution effort with coursework delivered via the Web. Faculty from five land-grant universities as part of the Great Plains-Interactive Distance Alliance teach courses in the program.

Educational Objectives

  • Understand, integrate, and be able to apply conceptual approaches to youth development (e.g., asset building, positive youth development, community youth development, risk and resiliency);
  • Understand normative pathways to development;
  • Understand youth and family cultural issues/contexts and their micro- and macro-influences on positive youth outcomes;
  • Understand and apply basic research and evaluation skills to youth development programming through an applied project that serves as a capstone experience under the direction of the candidate’s home institution;
  • Have developed skills in problem solving with “stakeholders” including funding sources, boards, other agencies, families, and other professionals;
  • Demonstrate understanding of the development and impact of local, regional, state, federal, and global policies on youth, and be able to advocate through policy development for optimal youth outcomes;
  • Be able to develop and apply resources (e.g., agency budgeting, grant writing and processing, fund raising) for successful implementation and management of youth-serving organizations; and
  • Understand the history of the youth development area, and advocate for the continued professionalization of the field.

Kansas State University offers a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics through distance education. The certificate program is a 15 credit-hour graduate program offered entirely by distance. Food Science Certificate

Food Science Non-degree Undergraduate Certificate and a Food Science Graduate Certificate are available. Continuing Education and cooperating academic departments offer the food science certificate programs consisting of credit courses online, and on videotape and audiotape. These courses are designed for the food industry professional. A food science certificate may be awarded from Kansas State University when a student completes 20 semester hours from K-State’s food science courses with course prefixes of ASI, GENAG, GRSC, and some HN, or ATM.

Gerontology Graduate Certificate

Gerontology is an addition to interinstitutional graduate programs offered through the Great Plains Distance Education Alliance (GP-IDEA).The certificate program has been designed for students whose goal is a credential in gerontology and who do not need a master's degree.

The 21-credit program will prepare professionals who are either working directly with older people or who are involved in education or research related to aging issues. Professionals offering direct services often are involved in health promotion programs; directing intergenerational activities; managing senior centers or retirement communities; counseling older people and their families; and helping people plan for retirement. Professionals involved in education and research may evaluate community-based services; teach others about the aging process; develop policies and programs to serve the needs of older adults; work with business and industry on issues related to an aging work force; and consumer education.

Personal Financial Planning Certificate

Kansas State University’s personal financial planning certificate program is a registered program with the CFP Board of Standards. Accurate and timely information in the key areas of financial planning will be provided, in addition to meeting the educational requirements of the CFP Board of Standards, qualifying you to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination. The program consists of six courses, which are offered one at a time over a period of slightly more than one year. All courses are offered at a distance using the Internet and K-State Online. Kansas State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner* and federally registered CFP (with flame logo) certification marks. CFP certification is granted only by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an education requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience and examination requirements. Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, Certified Financial Planner* and federally registered CFP (with flame logo), which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Areas include youth-serving organizations like 4-H; Boys and Girls Club; non-profit organizations; faith-based groups; community recreation facilities; correctional professions; elementary, middle and high school educators; and extension educators. The Certificate program offered through Kansas State University is a graduate certificate program. Students must apply for Graduate School admission. Each certificate requires twelve credit hours plus a one hour fundamentals course. The fundamentals course must be taken only once.
