About the Institution

Oklahoma State University (OSU) was founded on December 25, 1890, as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, just twenty months after the Land Run of 1889. It became Oklahoma State University on July 1, 1957. OSU is now a modern comprehensive land grant university that serves the state, national, and international communities by providing its students with exceptional academic experiences, by conducting scholarly research and other creative activities, and by disseminating knowledge to the people of Oklahoma and throughout the world through its outreach endeavors.

Distance learning opportunities are extended through activities coordinated by International Education & Outreach and offered by Independent Study and the various college outreach units. At the present time, there are over 100 undergraduate courses available at a distance through Independent Study and 12 accredited graduate level degree and certificate programs available through college outreach units. Delivery options differ among courses. The methods we use: videotape, satellite television, compressed video, broadcast television, cable television, ISDN/BRI desktop video, e-mail, CD ROM, independent study, audiotape, print, and the Internet; all are used separately or in conjunction with others, to provide educational opportunities to those that are hindered by time and distance.

With technology changing from one day to the next, we are aggressively attempting to meet the needs of students by utilizing state of the art equipment and the most advanced technological, cutting edge delivery methods available today. All individual OSU courses described in this catalog can be completed throughout the world by individuals with an English language proficiency equivalent to a score of 500 on the TOEFL examination. However, the only video cassette format available is VHS (NTSC).
